The path out in this economy is a stable of experiments. Washington is not the answer to the economy or to personal economic distress. The same is true of business. Those who come out of the recession stronger will be experimenting like mad for the next 18 months. Develop a strategy to throw ideas against the wall and see what sticks. Why is it sticking? Do more of what that is. What initiatives failed in the past two years? Reevaluate the features causing the failure (be honest about what they were), and see if the same condition exists now. If not, try the same initiative again. Your organization may have crossed into a newly favorable environment for it to work. Internal politics change dramatically in times of constraint and compression. And that is where we are now.
The same is true of personal challenges right now. Job hunts and career paths are not what they were 9 months ago. Plans need to be different to accommodate the new environment. A stimulus package is too far off for me. My family is going to experiment like crazy, looking for our solution.
Innovation is most possible when constraint is part of the setting. Compression creates new material. To quote a friend “Pressure and compression create diamonds”.
